A revolutionary breakthrough in CTP technology
VIM announces JT Direct Plate –
the industry’s most cost-effective CTP system
World’s first printing plates that can be imaged on a standard Epson inkjet printer make their North American debut at Print 09
Live plate imaging demonstrated at VIM Technology’s
exhibit at Print 09.
McCormick Place, Chicago – VIM Technologies, a leading innovator in digital plate technology, is launching a new CTP system at Print 09 that images VIM polyester and aluminum plates on a standard Epson inkjet printer. Called VIM-JT Direct Plate, the breakthrough technology provides small- and medium-sized printers with an affordable Computer to Plate (CTP) solution that streamlines their offset printing workflows to make printing more profitable.
The advancement means for the first time printers can cash in on all the cost- and time-saving advantages of CTP technology, without having to invest in an expensive dedicated platesetter and without employing any chemical processing or special inks.
The VIM-JT Direct Plate System allows printers to significantly reduce their production costs without compromising quality at a time when they are increasingly under extreme pricing pressures. “Printers worldwide have to compete against digital media while they are still reeling from the financial crisis,” says Avigdor Bieber, founder and CEO of VIM and a successful innovator in the digital imaging and printing industry. “VIM-JT Direct Plate makes printing more
cost competitive, so it helps printers win more jobs and improve profits at a time when that matters most.”
The JT Direct Plate System
The JT Direct Plate system is composed of the customer’s choice of an Epson Stylus Pro printer, a VIM RIP, a curing unit and a starting kit of JT Direct Plates.
The Epson Stylus Pro printers supported include the popular 3800, 4880, 7880 and 7900 models. No modifications to the inkjet systems are required. The plates are imaged using Epson’s Ultrachrome K3 or HDR aqueous pigmented ink and then heated in a simple curing unit for two minutes before going to press.
The JT Direct Plate VIM RIP software includes all the controls needed for an efficient and flexible workflow system. It supports multiple printers, printer and press calibration, integrated soft and hard copy proofing, a range of high quality screening options, digital archiving, and networked production. The VIM RIP is a customized version of Wasatch’s SoftRIP SP, and is a comprehensive package, including VIM Documentation, Utilities and Imaging configurations.
Available in a wide range of two-up and four-up sizes, the VIM-JT polyester and aluminum plates can be used on virtually any small- to medium-size offset press with conventional dampening. The polyester plates are available in 40-meter rolls now and the aluminum VIM-JT Direct plates will ship in Q4 2009. Both plates use the VIM proprietary coating technology to provide high quality, process-free printing results.
Customer’s Report
Ken Bauman, Print Shop Production Supervisor for Boise State University, one of the first users in North America, commented:
“We installed the JT Plate system in April and it has met all of our expectations.
It was easy to install and use, required no changes on our presses, and meets all of our printing needs at a fraction of the cost of the other systems we looked at. It also eliminated chemistry, and the plates are recyclable, assisting us reaching our environmental goals of a zero waste stream. Overall, it has reduced our printing costs significantly.
“The JT Plate system is innovative, flexible, uses off the shelf equipment, and gives us the capability of proofing and poster work as well as creating our offset plates. It has performed reliably and consistently and the VIM support has been excellent. A great system.”
Key Advantages
“This is a technical breakthrough! Other supplier’s inkjet-imaged plates require that a special imaging ink is used,” says Bieber. “Imaging the VIM-JT Direct Inkjet Plates is both easy and completely free of hazardous chemicals and solvent based inks. Because we use Epson inks, the inkjet unit’s warranty is preserved. It also means that the same inkjet printer can still be used for conventional full-color proofing, so it can provide proofs for the plates, saving time, space and money.”
Since the same VIM RIP and inkjet printer that create the plates also produce the proof, the accuracy and efficiency of every job is enhanced.
The VIM-JT plates are engineered for durability. Both the polyester and aluminum products can produce up to 20,000 impressions per plate, fully covering the production volume needs of small- and medium-sized printers.
The print quality produced by VIM-JT plates is equally impressive. They can produce great 150 lines per inch results with halftone screening and apparent 175 lines per inch quality using stochastic or frequency modulated screening techniques.
The JT Direct Plate System was designed for ease of use. If an operator knows how to run an Epson inkjet printer, he or she can quickly be trained to image VIM-JT plates. The VIM RIP is easy to install and integrate and has a simple, intuitive user interface that is designed to be an integral part of the printer’s existing workflow.
VIM-JT Direct Plate conserves space by eliminating the need for bulky platesetters, darkrooms, stripping tables and other devices associated with plate making. The same device that makes the proof also creates the plate, conserving floor space.
Green Gains
VIM-JT plates are environmentally sound and easily recyclable, delivering a long list of eco-friendly benefits. They are not light sensitive and are imaged like any other inkjet media. They are waste free; no circulators are required and there is no disposal of anything. They are solvent free and process free, negating the need for cleaners, washes and other potentially harmful chemicals.
VIM-JT plates require no water. That means there is no plumbing, no draining, and no rinses or baths to affect the workplace or the environment.
And in production, VIM-JT plates are compatible with soy, metallic and UV inks and alcohol-free dampening solutions, further strengthening their environmentally friendly nature.
“Printers who were waiting for Computer To Plate to become affordable can now join the CTP revolution and take advantage of all the benefits that go with it,”
Bieber says. “VIM-JT plates make printing more cost competitive and that will make printers more successful.”
The VIM-JT Direct Plate system, with polyester and aluminum options, is being distributed through VIM Technologies’ network of North American dealers.

| Press Release August 10th, 2009 | VIM declares that Presstek’s August 7 press release is premature – The decision in the International Trade Commission is merely preliminary, and VIM expects that it will be reversed
August 10, 2009- VIM Technologies Ltd. today corrects the premature press release published August 7, 2009 by Presstek, Inc.
Presstek’s press release ignores that the opinion of the Administrative Law Judge of the International Trade Commission (“ITC”), made public on August 5, 2009, is merely an initial determination, and must be reviewed by the full ITC – and in all likelihood reviewed even further – before any final determination is made. At this point, there is no order or injunction against VIM, and VIM may continue to import its digital printing plates into the U.S., and VIM’s U.S. distributors may continue to sell those plates to their customers. Further, VIM has already filed a Petition for Review with the ITC, pointing out the numerous serious errors of law and fact in the initial determination that require reversal. VIM fully expects that the full ITC, reviewing the initial determination, will recognize these errors, will reverse the initial determination, and will conclude that VIM’s digital printing plates do not infringe the claims of Presstek’s patents. As a result, VIM fully expects, once the final determination is entered and the ITC review process is complete, that VIM will continue to be able to import its digital printing plates into the U.S., and that its U.S. distributors will continue to be able sell those plates to their customers. Avigdor Bieber, founder and CEO of VIM, stated, “As intellectual property holders, VIM respects intellectual property rights of others. However, we are confident that we do not infringe any of Presstek’s patents, and are certain the full ITC will reach the same conclusion, regardless of the erroneous findings in the initial determination. It is regrettable that Presstek continues to feel the need to harass and intimidate VIM’s distributors and customers, rather than trying to compete with us fairly in the marketplace.”
Mr. Bieber added, “VIM’s digital plates are already welcomed and selected by a continuously growing number of printers for their quality and competitive pricing. VIM's digital plates finally enable printers to return to profitable use of their digital presses. We trust that the digital printing industry will see through Presstek's latest attempt to ‘corner the market’ and will continue using the VIM plates.”
VIM is a leader in the field of digital printing plates and related imaging products that significantly increase the profitability of offset printing. By combining an innovative approach, state of the art technologies, and many years of research and development experience, VIM digital printing plates expand the profitability of digital press offerings by enabling higher quality output and capacity utilization in both short and long print runs.

VIM corrects Presstek’s misleading April 23rd press release - VIM`s Invalidity argument against Presstek patent is still pending in the Federal Patent Court in Munich
May 14, 2009- VIM Technologies Ltd. today corrects the misleading press release published April, 23, 2009 by Presstek, Inc. about the German patent infringement judgment given in the first instance.
Contrary to Presstek’s release, VIM`s Invalidity argument against Presstek patent is still pending in the Federal Patent Court in Munich. The oral hearing in said nullity action which in fact is a completely separate legal proceedings has been fixed for December 15th.
VIM will appeal the German judgment given in the infringement proceedings in the first instance and will do so immediately upon receipt of said judgment in writing.
To be clear: VIM may continue to sell its digital printing plates in Europe and in the US. VIM may even continue to sell its digital printing plates in Germany until the obligatory security in the amount of one million Euros is served by Presstek, as decided by the German first instance`s decision.
VIM continues to vigorously defend itself and its distributors against the meritless claims filed by Presstek in the International Trade Commission (ITC) in the U.S. and in the German Court of Appeals and the German Federal Patent Court. VIM remains confident that the patents asserted by Presstek will be judged invalid and not infringed by VIM’s products. VIM fully expects that the ongoing Hearing in the ITC, in the nullity action in the German Federal Patent Court and in the German appeal proceedings finally will result in VIM’s prevailing on all issues.
In respect to the decision made by the first instance of the German District Court in Düsseldorf, VIM will appeal that judgment immediately upon its receipt the full judgment in writing.
Avigdor Bieber, founder and CEO of VIM, stated, “As intellectual property holders, VIM respects intellectual property rights of others. However, we are confident that we do not infringe any of Presstek’s patents, and are certain the ITC in the United States and the Federal Patent Court in Munich as well as the German Court of Appeals in Düsseldorf will reach the same conclusion as VIM.
We will vigorously defend our position against Presstek’s claims, which we are convinced are baseless. It is regrettable that Presstek continues to bring this dispute to the public – obviously with the intention of harassing and intimidating VIM’s distributors and customers, rather than trying to compete with us fairly in the marketplace.”

VIM declares that Presstek’s April 15 press release is misleading -- There Is No Injunction against VIM preventing it from selling its Plates in the US!
April 16, 2009- VIM Technologies Ltd. today corrects the misleading press release published April, 15, 2009 by Presstek, Inc.
Contrary to Presstek’s release, there is no injunction against VIM or any of its US distributors preventing the US sales of VIM’s plates. Neither VIM nor any of its US distributors was involved in the New Hampshire litigation by Presstek against Prograf Digital Services, and neither VIM nor any of its US distributors is affected by the settlement of that lawsuit.
To be clear: VIM may continue sell its digital printing plates in the US, and VIM’s US distributors may continue to sell VIM’s digital printing plates.
VIM further detests the ongoing misleading attempts by Presstek to prevent US printers from having several sources for plates, and not being confined to a single supplier.
VIM continues to vigorously defend itself and its distributors against the meritless claims filed by Presstek in the International Trade Commission (ITC). VIM remains confident that the patents asserted by Presstek are invalid and not infringed by VIM’s products. VIM fully expects that the upcoming Hearing in the ITC will result in VIM’s prevailing on all issues.
Avigdor Bieber, founder and CEO of VIM, stated, “As intellectual property holders, VIM respects intellectual property rights of others. However, we are confident that we do not infringe any of Presstek’s patents, and are certain the ITC will reach the same conclusion. VIM TECHNOLOGIES TO RELEASE JT DIRECT INKJET PLATES IN MARCH 2009
VIM Technologies, LTD. is announcing the coming release of VIM JT Direct Inkjet Plates, yet another product expanding the commercial offering of the company.
VIM JT Direct Inkjet Plates, first introduced at Drupa, have generated overwhelming interest from customers, distributors and the professional press. VIM Technologies has began the commercialization process of the much anticipated polyester plates, and will release them to the market in March 2009. The commercialization of the aluminum plates will start in April 2009.
“We have shown good results at Drupa and had exceeded expectations in the initial testing by customers. We have made great progress since then, showing exceptional results in run-length and printing quality in the latest tests,” says Avigdor Bieber, founder and CEO of VIM Technologies.
The VIM JT Direct Inkjet Plates for offset presses are imaged on standard high quality Epson Stylus® Pro UltraChrome models, using the standard Epson aqueous inks. The imaged plates require no processing and are fixed by baking in an oven, which hardens the imaged plate for the press.
“This is a technological breakthrough, as previous inkjet-imaged plates from other suppliers have required that a special imaging ink be used,” added Bieber. “Because we use standard, original manufacturer's inks the printer’s warranty is preserved. It also means that the same printer can still be used for conventional full-color proofing, so it can act as a proofer for the plates, saving space and money.”
VIM JT Direct Inkjet Plates require minimal investment in equipment, and some printers will be able to use their current inkjet device. They provide a real low-cost CTP entry solution, which appeals to small and medium size commercial printers.

| Press release April 10th, 2008 | VIM Technologies, Ltd. Responds to Presstek’s ITC Complaint by Asserting Non-Infringement, Invalidity and Unenforceability of the Patents at Issue
April 10, 2008 - VIM Technologies Ltd. today responded sharply to the baseless complaint filed by Presstek, Inc. in the International Trade Commission (ITC).
VIM’s response points out in extensive detail why VIM’s digital printing plates do not infringe Presstek’s asserted patents.
VIM also explains how Presstek’s patents are invalid and unenforceable, and should never have been asserted against VIM, in the first place.
Avigdor Bieber, founder and CEO of VIM, said “We are confident that the digital printing industry will see clearly that VIM has not infringed any of Presstek’s patents; that the patents at issue are invalid and unenforceable, and will see through Presstek’s regrettable act of bringing the ITC action for what it is: a bald attempt to intimidate printers in an effort to deprive them of their fundamental right to have multiple supplies of plates.
Regardless, VIM will continue to sell and provide its customers with a choice of better and more economical plates, a choice that the industry has deserved for many years. “
Mr. Bieber added, “In light of VIM’s firm response today to Presstek’s complaint, digital printing companies should feel confident that they can continue to use VIM’s digital plates without fear of Presstek or its invalid and unenforceable patents”.

VIM Expects to Prevail Over Presstek's ITC Complaint
March 16, 2008 -- VIM Technologies Ltd. today reiterated its intention to vigorously defend itself and its distributors against the baseless complaint filed by Presstek, Inc. in the International Trade Commission (ITC).
It is important to understand that instituting an investigation is merely a formality, and in no way signifies any "favorable response" by the ITC, as Presstek is suggesting. It is also important to understand that Presstek's allegations are based solely on its U.S. patents, and have no effect on any person or company outside of the U.S.
Once the merits of the case are considered by the ITC, VIM fully expects to prevail. VIM does not infringe any of Presstek's patents, and is confident that the ITC will reach the same conclusion.
Presstek's baseless infringement claims in the ITC are creating confusion and uncertainty among users of VIM's plates and damaging the ability of VIM's distributors to compete fairly in the U.S. marketplace. VIM will not be intimidated by Presstek's heavy-handed tactics against VIM and its distributors. As Avigdor Bieber, founder and CEO of VIM, stated, "VIM is an intellectual property holder itself, and respects the intellectual property rights of others. We have not infringed Presstek's patents, and expect that the ITC will agree. It is regrettable that Presstek would attempt to use the ITC to create an unwarranted advantage in the marketplace."
VIM's digital plates are already welcomed and selected by a continuously growing number of printers for their quality and competitive pricing. "VIM's digital plates enable printers to finally return to profitable use of their digital presses. We trust that the digital industry will see Presstek's ITC action for what it is, will not accept Presstek's attempt to restrain supply alternatives, and will continue to use VIM's plates."
